RedState

I'd like to quote a conservative political paper called RedState:

Why didn’t restrictive gun control laws save the victims of Newtown?

This is what the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has to say about Connectictut’s gun control regime:

Connecticut has strong gun laws that help combat the illegal gun market, prevent the sale of most guns without background checks and reduce risks to children, according to the Brady Campaign. In the organization’s 2009 state scorecards released for all 50 states, Connecticut earned 53 points out of a total of 100 and has the nation’s fourth strongest gun laws.

“Connecticut has done more than most states to combat illegal guns and has worked to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. In fact, Connecticut has a one-of-a-kind law that allows a judge to remove guns from people who have been determined to be a threat to themselves or others,” said Ron Pinciaro, President of CT Against Gun Violence.

As noted above, according to the Brady Campaign, Connecticut has the nation’s fourth-strongest gun laws. The sale and possession of so-called assault weapons are banned under state law. As noted above, the state empowers judges to remove guns from those who constitute a threat. The state earns high marks for gun dealer regulation, reporting of lost or stolen guns, background checks, permit to purchase, child safety, and earns the maximum score on guns in public places.

So here’s the challenge for gun control advocates: explain why you failed the people of Newtown. You cited Connecticut as a national example. You said its laws “reduce risks to children.” You gave no state a higher rating for keeping guns out of public places — like schools.

And a criminally insane man stole legally-owned guns (owned under Connecticut’s regime) after being denied their legal purchase, broke in through a window, and killed children and adults — adults who were not armed to shoot back, and so died unable to save the children who also died.

You want this one event to be a national test? Fine. Why are there 20 children dead when the state of Connecticut did what you said they should to keep their people safe?

Once you answer that question, we can get this conversation underway.

Evil people will find a way. You can't protect the innocent by taking away their ability to fight back.

Just some random gun thoughts and some facts

Just some random gun thoughts and some facts:

A 1997 high school shooting in Pearl, Miss., was halted by the school's vice principal after he retrieved the Colt .45 he kept in his truck.

A 1998 middle school shooting ended when a man living next door heard gunfire and apprehended the shooter with his shotgun.

A 2002 terrorist attack at an Israeli school was quickly stopped by an armed teacher and a school guard.

A 2002 law school shooting in Grundy, Va., came to an abrupt conclusion when students carrying firearms confronted the shooter.

A 2007 mall shooting in Ogden, Utah, ended when an armed off-duty police officer intervened.

A 2009 workplace shooting in Houston, Texas, was halted by two coworkers who carried concealed handguns.

A 2012 church shooting in Aurora, Colo., was stopped by a member of the congregation carrying a gun.

At the recent mall shooting in Portland, Ore., the gunman took his own life minutes after being confronted by a shopper carrying a concealed weapon.

To counter a few incidents of muslim extremists in 1974 shooting up schools, the Israeli Govt. trained and armed teachers.
When is the last time you heard of a Jihadist shooting up a school in Israel?

The Clinton era Federal Assault Weapons Ban defined 'Assault weapons' because they possessed a minimum set of largely COSMETIC features from the following list:

Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Bayonet mount or lug
Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
A muzzle mounted Grenade launcher

Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor
Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold
Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
A semi-automatic version of a fully automatic firearm.

Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:
Folding or telescoping stock
Pistol grip
Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds
Detachable magazine.

Now how the HELL are any of these things supposed to make a weapon lethal? They don't. Another example of politicians doing something just to be seen doing something. I mean, bayonet mounts/lugs really?

The defunct federal ban also set a magazine limit at 10 rounds, except for military or police. Because police operate with backup and in groups, which is why they need larger capacity pistol magazines than do “civilians” who must face criminals alone and therefore need less ammunition. WHAT!!?

Its expiration had little if any increase in crime.
As for Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. Funny how, where guns are BANNED...gun crime is rising steadily.

1996 National Agreement on Firearms in Australia

In the first 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are here:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms went up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned their guns in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possessed their guns!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the year after its passing, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns.

The Sandy Hook school tragedy should never happen again, but it is not the fault of firearms. Remember Timothy McVeigh murdered 168 people, 19 of whom were six or younger, he never fired a shot. The sick twisted murderer WILL find a way.

A Paramedic checks in

There's something to be said about seeing a grown man cry. If that doesn't tug at your heart strings and make you cry as well, your heart is of steel. Those of you who were in attendance of last night's meeting of Wilkes-Barre's Council know exactly what I'm speaking of. I'm not referring to the 11 co-workers who have been furloughed. I'm referring to the gentleman from Parsons who sat in tears and addressed city council to explain how, on 2 separate occasions, he had gone into cardiac arrest and was there to thank the members of the fire department whose quick response and expert care allowed him to still be here to see the birth of his first grandchild. I'm referring to the retired fire captain who wept as he spoke of his years on the job and the impacts he has seen on the lives of so many throughout the years. I'm referring to the letter from a South Wilkes-Barre resident who thanked the fire department for their prompt response and wonderful care after he found his mother unresponsive at home. I'll also refer to a time years ago when I, myself, carried a little girl to a waiting ambulance after her lifeless body was found by co-workers and pulled from her second-floor bedroom as her house burned. This isn't about the firemen, this is about THEM, as they are all still here! To the cowards who felt the need to hide behind a screen name and write senseless, ignorant, uneducated comments under the newspaper's online stories: I pray for you. I pray for the day when you or a loved one is in need of emergency care. Whether you reside in an area that provides a tax-based service or is covered with the skilled care of admirable volunteers, perhaps you, too, will realize the importance of how minutes or seconds matter. This isn't about the men who are fighting to get their jobs back. They are fighting for people like you! They are fighting to provide the care & services the taxpayers deserve! This is about YOU!!!

Repost of How I wrap Christmas gifts

2 years ago I posted this, thought I would again
Bob & Tweek^
Stewie ^

How I Wrap A Gift
How I Wrap A Gift (With Help From my cats (Bob,Tweek & Stewie)...)

1. Clear large space on table for wrapping present.
2. Go to wardrobe and collect bag from wardrobe.
3. Open door and remove Bob from wardrobe.
4. Go to cupboard and retrieve rolls of wrapping paper.
5. Go back and remove Tweek from cupboard.
6. Go to drawer and collect transparent sticky tape, ribbons, scissors, labels, etc.
7. Lay out presents and wrapping materials on table to enable wrapping strategy to be formed.
8. Go back to drawer to get string. Remove Stewie that has been in the drawer since last visit and collect string.
9. Reopen drawer and remove Tweek.
10. Remove present from bag.
11. Remove Bob from bag.
12. Open box to check present, remove Bob & Tweek from box, replace present.
13. Lay out paper to enable cutting to size.
14. Try to smooth out paper, realize Stewie is underneath and remove cat.
15. Cut the paper to size, trying to keep the cutting line straight.
16. Throw away first sheet as Bob tried to chase the scissors and tore paper.
17. Cut second sheet of paper to size by putting Bob & Tweek in the bag the present came out of.
18. Place present on paper to cut to size.
19. Lift up edges of paper to seal in present, wonder why edges now don't reach and realize Bob is between present and paper. Remove cat and retry.
20. Place object on paper to hold in place while cutting transparent sticky tape.
21. Spend next 20 minutes carefully trying to remove transparent sticky tape from Stewie with pair of nail scissors.
22. Seal paper down with transparent sticky tape, making corners as neat as possible.
23. Look for roll of ribbon, chase Bob down hall in order to retrieve ribbon.
24. Try to wrap present with ribbon in a two directional turn.
25. Re-roll ribbon and remove paper that is now torn due to Tweek's enthusiasm to chase ribbon end.
26. Repeat steps 13 - 20 until down to last sheet of paper.
27. Decide to skip steps 13- 17 in order to save time and reduce risk of loosing last sheet of paper by retrieving old cardboard box that you know is right size for sheet of paper.
28. Put present in box and tie down with string.
29. Remove string, open box and remove Bob.
30. Put all packing materials in bag with present and head for lockable room.
31. Once inside room, lock door and start to re-lay out packing materials.
32. Remove Bob & Tweek from box, unlock door, put cats outside door, close door and re-lock.
33. Repeat previous step as often as necessary until you can hear the cries from the cats outside the door.
34. Lay out last sheet of paper. (I know this is difficult in the small area of the bathroom, but try your best.)
35. Realize that Bob & Tweek have already gotten to the paper. Unlock door, go out and hunt through various cupboards looking for sheets of last year's paper, until you remember that you haven't got any left due to Stewie help with wrapping last year.
36. Retire back to room, lock door and sit on toilet while trying to work out how to make a torn sheet of paper look halfway presentable.
37. Seal box, wrap with paper and start repairs by very carefully sealing down tears with transparent sticky tape. Now tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst affected areas.
38. Label, then sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulating yourself on making good of a bad job.
39. Unlock door and go to kitchen to make a drink and feed the cats.
40. Spend the next 15 minutes looking for cats before coming to obvious conclusion...
41. Unwrap present, untie box and remove cats.
42. Retrieve all thrown away sheets of wrapping paper, feed the cats and retire to room for last attempt, making certain you are alone and the door is locked.
43. Find least torn and wrinkled sheets of paper along with the ones that the pattern matches closest.
44. Vainly try and wrap present in patchwork paper. Tie with the now tattered ribbon and decorate with the now limp bows. Label and put present in bag for fear of anyone seeing this disaster.
45. At time of handing over present, smile sweetly at the receiver's face as they try to hide their contempt at being handed such a badly wrapped present.
46. Swear to yourself that next year you will get the store to wrap the darn thing for you!

Merry Christmas,

High-Rises

Casey Roman called me a little while ago. He told me that someone on the Citizens Voice website was claiming that W-B had no high-rises. I don't know where that guy got that idea, I think he was just a troll, like Casey said he was.

W-B has the third highest amount of high-rises in the state. If I remember correctly, we have far more than the next highest city.

The National Fire Protection Association defines a high-rise as being higher than 75 feet, or about 7 stories.

This is one of the big reasons why our manpower MUST not be cut. The fire at the Sherman hills high-rise was almost a nightmare (from what I've been told because I was out of state at the time). People refused to leave the building, they stay close to the building and there are so many people that it overwhelms our department almost immediately when we are not at the strength we need.

Casey has also pointed out,"I can spit out my bedroom window and hit my neighbors house." This is another big reason that these cuts are insane. Fire doubles in size EVERY MINUTE! It will jump from one house to the next with more ease than Casey's spit.
But Leighton doesn't care, Barney farms is well spaced and made of newer materials than most of the city.

We are entering the most dangerous months of the year for fires AND fatalities, But Leighton 'furloughs' your ONLY line of defense.

And with the high-rises being mainly older people the risk is even greater.

Add on Edit: Chief Tom Makar informed me we are actually #4 in number of high rises.
"The order is Philly, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and then W-B tied with Reading is the list from 2005"
Interesting since Reading has roughly twice the population.

The Grinch

Well, 11 of our best are now wondering what they are going to tell their children on Christmas. That's right, 11 fire fighters have been laid off. Not 1 person in any other department has to worry. Not the second lawyer (The charter only calls for one) that makes $48,247.00. Not Leighton's boy puppet, Drew, who makes $38,682.00. Not one of the city hall people that do NOTHING to save lives.
Oh, and how did the unfortunate Firefighters find out?
The Line Chief had to deliver the letters. Here what they got.

That's it. After the 'King' negotiated a contract extension with us then three weeks later he started screaming that the city had no money. Now MONTHS later, just in time to put pressure on us, lay offs. But ONLY for us. Then he LIED, AGAIN, to the press, "we cannot continue to finance all government services and employee costs without cooperation from the city's unions." After he walked out on them while they made an offer! And this while STILL not giving us any kind of numbers to work with!

To quote another Firefighter, "I haven't felt like this since 9/11 and I saw the towers go down."

Wake Up Wilkes-Barre

If you go to Wake Up Wilkes-Barre you can see the true base salaries of W-B City employees.

Dan Emplit WBFD

A letter from the Fire Dept Union President

Good morning,

I am writing today because recent quotes from the administration are basically laying the whole cost of $2,000,000 budget shortfall on the WBFD.

"Police, public works and other departments also would be affected as the city struggles to make up for an estimated $2 million revenue shortfall this year and reduce the 31 percent property tax increase proposed in the mayor’s $45.8 million balanced budget for 2013."

Leighton said he is “always looking to increase revenue for the city.” He said there are “15 to 20 firefighters worried about their jobs,”

Twenty firefighters amount to over $1.7 million of the $2 million dollar budget deficit.

We have two main questions. The first one, that we have been asking for weeks is, what is the true number the city is looking to layoff? The second is has anyone truly looked into the fire budget as a whole?

The 2013 budget as presented has some major flaws in the public safety portion of the fire budget. Currently the city has budgeted for 61 firefighters for fire suppression, 8 firefighters for uniformed ambulance service, and 3 for administration which includes the fire inspector, training officer, and Chief of the department.

That amounts to a budget that reflects 72 firefighters on the WBFD, which is incorrect. Currently we are down to 64 firefighters. Logic would dictate that if you remove the extra 8 firefighters from the budget, that would take care of $700,000 of the 2013 budget shortfall.

Another question that we are inquiring about is $456,414 for the cities contribution into the new fire pension. In past audits, since our pension was solvent , the cities' contribution to the new fire pension was $0, and state money was the only monies added to our plan. Currently we do not have the 2011-2012 audit to check on contributions, but it should be due out shortly.

Just a note, the pension numbers and the three administrative firefighters positions cannot be found online. There is a page missing between pages 36 and 37 which details the cost of fire administration total on page 37.

Just to summarize, if the manning numbers are reworked and it is found the cities MMO for the new fire pension is still at $0, you can close more than half of the budget deficit without laying off a single firefighter from our already depleted force.

Throughout the years, we the Wilkes-Barre City Firefighters have always stepped up to help out the city in time of need, and now we are reduced by 24 firefighters ,and are threatened with the loss of 20 more.

At this moment, we are weighing our options as to how to keep the minute number of 64 on the job, when as all the studies show we should be at 88 firefighters at a minimum.

Just yesterday both of our Engine companies and both ambulances were tied up on calls when a dispatch came in for a car fire. An engine company pulled out of an operation to respond to the car fire but it took precious time. I shudder to think what the outcome would have been if it had been a structure fire.

At this time I am asking the administration and city council to look into the other city department budgets and maybe some other savings can be found.

The BIG lie

I went to tonight's council meeting. Actually I've made 4 of the last 5 (I think, they get a little mind numbing.)

I get why my union officers have to play nice with our dictator, I really do, They have to negotiate with him and his cronies. I however am NOT a union officer and I DON'T GOTTA.

Tonight Leighton told a BIG LIE. He said,"The firefighter's union has been very good to the city (We have, that's not the lie), and the city has been very good to the firefighters." WHAT!!!!!
List time!
Since the dictator has assumed what he thinks is a throne, 26 Firefighters have retired. They were replaced with FIVE.

We had 16 firemen per shift, now 11. Don't forget the Lloyds study said 17 is the minimum for public safety. But don't worry the dictator still has the security system that the public bought. AND WHAT THE HELL IS IT MADE OF PLATINUM?!!!

We had 5 engine houses. Gained one, lost 2 and remember that South Station's Engine is only manned about one eighth the time. Oh and before he makes noise about closing it, IT IS THE ONLY FIREHOUSE THAT IS NOT IN THE FLOODPLAIN!!

We got new Engines. That the dictator took credit for them, when it was a generous anonymous donation.

We had 5 Engines and now we have 2 and the part time Engine 3.

He put's our salaries out to the press, but doesn't tell them that the numbers are artificially inflated by judgments that he illegally hid money that was rightfully ours for years (honestly, when he became mayor, if he had asked for this money, We would have given it to him) or that it included overtime THAT HE CREATED by not having enough firefighters to cover the shifts.
He has demonized us at almost every turn and blames anyone else for the mess he has created.

When the mayor was elected he asked all the city unions to help the city financially in their contracts. Only the fire union did (concessions = approx 4.5 million dollars over 9 years). Mayor Leighton said "By making (these) substantial concessions, the firefighters' union has agreed to become partners with the city in its revitalization plan"
We've done OUR part. HE hasn't done his. And now he will risk our lives and yours, because of his pet projects and friends (JJ and the whole $300 an hour). But he thinks we ,the taxpayers, owe him. Proof? Why hasn't he payed us back for the security system? Why hasn't he taken a pay cut? He's the fourth highest salaried mayor in the state. And that doesn't include the fuel he helped himself to.

"I paid for my newspaper subscription with it."

You're probably wondering what the title of this post has to do with... well anything. It's a quote from tonight's council meeting.
Let me start at the beginning. The vast majority of tonight's speakers were fed up with the idea of more taxes. Really fed up. They should have been even MORE fed up with Leighton texting the whole meeting instead of listening.
Dale Harris of 'Harris Muffler' pointed out that since "Leighton became mayor taxes have increased 240%"!
Linda Urban told of a man who's vehicle had been towed by LAG. He needed his tools out of it for work. Allegedly Leo Glodzik told him he could only get his tools if he,"paid $100 and turned over his title." That seems shady to me, but honestly I don't know the legalities.
What I do know, and was witness to was a minor confrontation between Mrs. Urban and Mr. Glozdik.
Linda Urban: What did you do with his $100?
Leo Glozdik: I paid for my newspaper subscription with it!
More than anything, This (and the smirk on his face) tells me and everyone else exactly what kind of person Leo is. You remember the person Leighton vouches for.

Near the end Karen Ceppa-Hirko pointed out various major inconsistencies in the preliminary proposed budget.
And finally when Leighton tried to turn the meeting into 'city workers bad' tirade He was meet with, first, someone saying we could save money if he didn't "take gas" and then someone else (could've been me) mentioned "Or payed his buddy $300 an hour."

Honestly, there was a lot of applause for NOT getting services cut and for Leighton, council and most of city hall taking the cuts before doing anything. Specifically Leighton taking a $40,000 cut.

2012 Final Presidential Debate

I've got to say that a comment made during the debate on Monday annoyed me.

the exact transcript:
Romney: Our Navy is old -- excuse me, our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're now at under 285. We're headed down to the low 200's if we go through a sequestration. That's unacceptable to me.

I want to make sure that we have the ships that are required by our Navy. Our Air Force is older and smaller than at any time since it was founded in 1947. We've changed for the first time since FDR -- since FDR we had the -- we've always had the strategy of saying we could fight in two conflicts at once. Now we're changing to one conflict. Look, this, in my view, is the highest responsibility of the President of the United States, which is to maintain the safety of the American people. . .

OBAMA: Bob, I just need to comment on this. First of all, the sequester is not something that I've proposed. It is something that Congress has proposed. It will not happen. The budget that we are talking about is not reducing our military spending. It is maintaining it.

But I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.

And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where we're counting slips. It's what are our capabilities. And so when I sit down with the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we determine how are we going to be best able to meet all of our defense needs in a way that also keeps faith with our troops, that also makes sure that our veterans have the kind of support that they need when they come home.

The comment that annoyed me, of course, is:
"Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines."

The condescending nature and tone of the comment was VERY un-Presidential, and wrong to boot.
First off, I know that the Marines, at least, are still taught how to fight with bayonets.

"Bayonet charges have been critical events in modern warfare. Gettysburg, and thus the Civil War, turned on a bayonet charge down little Round Top. In the Korean War, the defense of Chip Yong Ni likewise saw a famous bayonet charge, that one by the outnumbered French Foreign Legionnaires. That same war saw a platoon of U.S. Infantry take out machine gun positions with a bayonet charge on a piece of terrain that became known as “Bayonet Hill.” In both Iraq and Afghanistan, British Army units have executed bayonet charges to overcome resistance, most famously in the 2004 “Battle of Danny Boy” at Al Amara, Iraq."

Second, Aircraft carriers have been around since 1918. The USS Langley (CV-1) was in service on March 20, 1922. The Lexington class was commissioned in 1927. Nuclear submarines have been in service since the USS Nautilus was launched in 1954. To act like Governor Romney couldn't grasp the fundamentals of this is nothing but an arrogant ass looking to demean his opponent.

There is a MINIMUM number of naval vessels NEEDED to do the job that they are tasked with. If experts tell you that a certain number is the minimum, what makes him a better judge than the experts? I mean they ARE THE EXPERTS!

AND Obama is gutting not only what we have, but what we would have!
"In citing high technology, Obama gave us a display of brazen hypocrisy at its finest. On his watch, the Department of Defense has been cutting procurement programs such as the F-22 and the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle. In both cases, our military personnel must now make do with aging alternatives (the F-15C and AAV-7 family of vehicles). The F-15 entered service in 1976, the AAV-7 in 1972. By the 2016 election, both of these systems will be 40 years old, and expected to still be in service for as much as a decade. So much for relying on new technology — Obama has halted production of the high-tech replacements."

As for our Navy, "The Obama administration’s neglect of the Navy can be typified by the early retirement of the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and its plans to decommission other naval assets. In August of this year, I outlined on NRO why the Enterprise should remain in service, but the Big E is only the most prominent asset slated for premature retirement. The administration also plans to decommission and scrap six Ticonderoga-class cruisers, although the vessels have as many as 15 years of service life left (even without further overhauls). Maintaining freedom of the seas requires hulls in the water — and the Navy hasn’t even started building the replacements for these cruisers."

"None of our carriers or submarines — no matter how high-tech they are — are capable of covering the Persian Gulf and South China Sea at the same time, or the Mediterranean Sea and the Korean peninsula simultaneously."

"What they fail to mention is the fact that China’s defense budget has at least quadrupled since 2000. China is becoming more aggressive around the Senkaku Islands and the South China Sea, in disputes with American allies such as Japan and the Philippines, and it has just commissioned its first aircraft carrier."

"In World War II, when the United States built a navy second to none, our military had a running start with the Naval Expansion Act of 1938 and the Two-Ocean Navy Act of July 1940 — bills passed long before the attack on Pearl Harbor. But even with that running start, most of those ships did not arrive on the front lines until mid-1943 or later, and many sailors and Marines paid the price in blood for America’s failure to prepare. Who will pay the price today, in the event of military conflict?"

Numbers

When Leighton became the mayor in '04 he told ALL the city worker that concessions had to be made by ALL or the city would go act47 (distressed). The FD stood up and made concessions of more than $4 million over 8 years (no other union did anything) and we didn't go act47.

We then found out that Leighton hid money (McGroarty did first) and fought for that money (about $1 million total), by my math we still gave the city $3 million (the other unions still didn't give squat) and he treats us like a baby treats a diaper.

BTW those figures include overtime, that is overtime LEIGHTON created but not hiring new firefighters as the old retire. We have a certain amount of positions that NEED to be filled every shift and without enough FF's that creates overtime.
Leightons solution to the overtime HE CREATED has been to reduce the number of firefighters per shift. We are now down to 11 from 16, where the Lloyds study (a study the city commissioned, the city paid for and the city has copies of) says that 17 per shift is the minimum for your safety and ours.

Leighton is a master at telling people half truths to make others look bad. It's amazing that people still believe the dictator when he has been caught so many time doing so many illegal things.

When the mayor was elected in 2004

When the mayor was elected in 2004, he asked all the city unions to help the city financially in their contracts or the city would face Act 47. The fire union stepped up first and did (concessions = approx 3.5 million dollars over 7 years and approx $1 million in the last 2 years).
Mayor Leighton said "By making (these) substantial concessions, the firefighters' union has agreed to become partners with the city in its revitalization plan"

The Fire Fighters Union did their part and who gets cut back? Who has the mayor demonized in the press? Remember the Lloyds study (that THE CITY commissioned, the CITY PAID for, and is available to the mayor) says 17 firefighter per shift is the MINIMUM for safety, not the mayors 11 per shift.

And what did the other unions give?

Leighton would rather pay his buddies huge amounts of money than admit he is risking our safety and yours.

Also notice that the dictator isn't cutting his own bloated salary. He is the third highest paid mayor in Pa, he makes more than the Mayor of our state capitol! And don't forget those fringe benefits like free gas! Or paying his buddy $300 per hour.

Gun Control

I was sent this years ago, it's a little out of date but still relevant.
I like it. It is ALMOST as sarcastic as me.

1. Banning guns works, which is why New York, DC, & Chicago cops need guns.

2. Washington DC’s low murder rate of 69 per 100,000 is due to strict gun control, and Indianapolis’ high murder rate of 9 per 100,000 is due to the lack of gun control.

3. Statistics showing high murder rates justify gun control but statistics showing increasing murder rates after gun control are “just statistics.”

4. The Brady Bill and the Assault Weapons Ban, both of which went into effect in 1994 are responsible for the decrease in violent crime rates, which have been declining since 1991.

5. We must get rid of guns because a deranged lunatic may go on a shooting spree at any time and anyone who would own a gun out of fear of such a lunatic is paranoid.

6. The more helpless you are the safer you are from criminals.

7. An intruder will be incapacitated by tear gas or oven spray, but if shot with a .357 Magnum will get angry and kill you.

8. A woman raped and strangled is morally superior to a woman with a smoking gun and a dead rapist at her feet.

9. When confronted by violent criminals, you should “put up no defense – give them what they want, or run” (Handgun Control Inc. Chairman Pete Shields, Guns Don’t Die – People Do, 1981, p. 125).

10. The New England Journal of Medicine is filled with expert advice about guns; just like Guns & Ammo has some excellent treatises on heart surgery.

11. One should consult an automotive engineer for safer seat belts, a civil engineer for a better bridge, a surgeon for internal medicine, a computer programmer for hard drive problems, and Sarah Brady for firearms expertise.

12. The 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1787, refers to the National Guard, which was created 130 years later, in 1917.

13. The National Guard, federally funded, with bases on federal land, using federally-owned weapons, vehicles, buildings and uniforms, punishing trespassers under federal law, is a “state” militia.

14. These phrases: “right of the people peaceably to assemble,” “right of the people to be secure in their homes,” “enumerations herein of certain rights shall not be construed to disparage others retained by the people,” and “The powers not delegated herein are reserved to the states respectively, and to the people” all refer to individuals, but “the right of the people to keep and bear arms” refers to the state.

15. “The Constitution is strong and will never change.” But we should ban and seize all guns thereby violating the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Amendments to that Constitution.

16. Rifles and handguns aren’t necessary to national defense! Of course, the army has hundreds of thousands of them.

17. Private citizens shouldn’t have handguns, because they aren’t “military weapons”, but private citizens shouldn’t have “assault rifles”, because they are military weapons.

18. In spite of waiting periods, background checks, fingerprinting, government forms, etc., guns today are too readily available, which is responsible for recent school shootings. In the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's, anyone could buy guns at hardware stores, army surplus stores, gas stations, variety stores, Sears mail order, no waiting, no background check, no fingerprints, no government forms and there were no school shootings.

19. The NRA’s attempt to run a “don’t touch” campaign about kids handling guns is propaganda, but the anti-gun lobby’s attempt to run a “don’t touch” campaign is responsible social activity.

20. Guns are so complex that special training is necessary to use them properly, and so simple to use that they make murder easy.

21. A handgun, with up to 4 controls, is far too complex for the typical adult to learn to use, as opposed to an automobile that only has 20.

22. Women are just as intelligent and capable as men but a woman with a gun is “an accident waiting to happen” and gun makers’ advertisements aimed at women are “preying on their fears.”

23. Ordinary people in the presence of guns turn into slaughtering butchers but revert to normal when the weapon is removed.

24. Guns cause violence, which is why there are so many mass killings at gun shows.

25. Trigger locks do not interfere with the ability to use a gun for defensive purposes, which is why you see police officers with one on their duty weapon.

26. Any self-loading small arm can legitimately be considered to be a “weapon of mass destruction” or an “assault weapon.”

27. Most people can’t be trusted, so we should have laws against guns, which most people will abide by because they can be trusted.

28. The right of Internet pornographers to exist cannot be questioned because it is constitutionally protected by the Bill of Rights, but the use of handguns for self defense is not really protected by the Bill of Rights.

29. Free speech entitles one to own newspapers, transmitters, computers, and typewriters, but self- defense only justifies bare hands.

30. The ACLU is good because it uncompromisingly defends certain parts of the Constitution, and the NRA is bad, because it defends other parts of the Constitution.

31. Charlton Heston, a movie actor as president of the NRA is a cheap lunatic who should be ignored, but Michael Douglas, a movie actor as a representative of Handgun Control, Inc. is an ambassador for peace who is entitled to an audience at the UN arms control summit.

32. Police operate with backup within groups, which is why they need larger capacity pistol magazines than do “civilians” who must face criminals alone and therefore need less ammunition.

33. We should ban “Saturday Night Specials” and other inexpensive guns because it’s not fair that poor people have access to guns too.

34. Police officers have some special Jedi-like mastery over handguns that private citizens can never hope to obtain.

35. Private citizens don’t need a gun for self- protection because the police are there to protect them even though the Supreme Court says the police are not responsible for their protection.

36. Citizens don’t need to carry a gun for personal protection but police chiefs, who are desk-bound administrators who work in a building filled with cops, need a gun.

37. “Assault weapons” have no purpose other than to kill large numbers of people. The police need assault weapons. You do not.

38. When Microsoft pressures its distributors to give Microsoft preferential promotion, that’s bad; but when the Federal government pressures cities to buy guns only from Smith & Wesson, that’s good.

39. We don't need firearms for defense, we have 911. Even though it may take more than 6 minutes for the call to be dispatched and another 6 minutes for police to arrive.

40. Handgun Control, Inc., says they want to “keep guns out of the wrong hands.” Guess what? You have the wrong hands.

Stacey Dash gets demonized for supporting Romney

Stacey Dash was interviewed on CNN about the aftermath of expressing her Presidential choice.

Basically the smoking hot Miss Dash is getting 'Hate Tweets' because she is supporting Romney/Ryan.
What a single, black, currently unemployed actress can't express support for HER PRESIDENTIAL SUPPORT without getting death threats? What the hell is wrong with people.
She chose Romney over Obama "not based on the color of his skin, but the content of his character." She doesn't 'bash' Obama, she just expressed her belief that Romney is the better choice. And got threats because of it. Of course they were 'Anonymous', people who don't have the courage to put a name to the threat.
Did I mention she is Smoking Hot?

And now there were only 11

I guess we shouldn't be surprised (and honestly I'm not) but the safety of people in Wilkes-Barre has been sacrificed by the dictator yet AGAIN.

Under Leighton
We've gone from 17 men/shift to 11.
From 5 Firehouses to 3 one of which (South Station) is only open about 1/8 of the time.

But Leighton has
Stolen gas
Payed his buddy $300/hour
Lied to us
Appointed cronies on panels to investigate LAG
Blamed everyone for his incompetent and corrupt 'leadership'
Oh crap just read the papers, Wake Up Wilkes-Barre and this blog.

But don't worry, I'm sure the dictator's ultra expensive security system will keep HIM safe.

Flags

Just in case our narcissist-in-chief didn't know,
This is the Flag of the United States of America.

This is an 'obamanation' that costs $35 from the Obama for America store.

What President would put his own logo on a U.S. flag? Redesigning our flag to include his own re-election emblem is about as arrogant and narcissistic as someone can get!
How about showing some pride in our country on occasion instead of apologizing for it all the time!

And for the Democrats that thought THIS was a good idea
This desecration of 'Old Glory' flew above the Democratic Party Headquarters in Lake county Florida until some Veterans groups complained.

Jim Croce wrote and sang, "You don't step on Superman's cape", But IMHO you DON'T desecrate the Stars and Stripes especially for your own self masturbatory promotion.

Waiting for the 'Blame Game' to start

Well Mayor Lies-to-you is about to let loose with another one.
Let me start at the beginning, about three weeks ago, the administration made a very decent contract offer to the FD (which we accepted and the city signed).
I thought it was odd that our dictator would make a decent contract offer 2 years before our contract expired. I still think it was odd.
NOW, however, the dictator is screaming city poverty and he wants to renege on the contract (that they JUST signed!!). Basically he wants everything he promised us just 3 weeks ago and A LOT MORE.

Yeah, I believe.
Maybe the city wouldn't be broke if you had refrained from paying your buddy, JJ, THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS AN HOUR!!!

Maybe the city wouldn't be broke if you had refrained from spending FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS A MONTH ON BARRACADES. Wow, I bet you the rental company was a faithful campaign donor.

Maybe the city wouldn't be broke if you had refrained from STEALING GAS.

Maybe the city wouldn't be broke if you had refrained from SPENDING MONEY ON THAT NEAR WORTHLESS CAMERA SYSTEM (that has the same megapixals as a 10 year old cell phone).

Maybe the city wouldn't be broke if you had refrained from buying a NEW jeep for the man who ABUSED OUR GAS PUMPS JUST LIKE YOU DID.

Maybe the city wouldn't be broke if you had stopped council from going on taxpayer paid vacations.... ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ONLY HAVE 7 WEEKS LEFT IN OFFICE (Hey council, how's all that 'help' from the good Tony Thomas going?)

Maybe the city wouldn't be broke if you hadn't spent $175,000 to $300,000 on that damn parking feasibility study.

I can't wait for the dictators inevitable, "The city's unions are too blame, they won't work with me" speech.

Maybe Tommy Boy should remember that one union (AND ONLY ONE) MADE HUGE CONCESSIONS when he came into office and screamed that the city is broke. That totaled 3.5 MILLION DOLLARS over 7 years.

I bet Tommy boy will give the 'unions bad' speech and then be 'on vacation' or unavailable for a few council meetings.

At least Leighton is trying to sell 'the bus with no title and never went anywhere'. Hmmm, that's a bit of a mouthful. I think I'll just call it 'Leighton's special bus'.

DNC Lies

The keynote speaker, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, also said there have been 4.5 million “new jobs” under Obama.
Actually it is 4 million. And the economy has lost over 4.3 million in the same time. there is a net decrease of 316,000 jobs

The keynote speaker and others claimed the Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, would raise taxes on the “middle class.”
Romney has repeatedly insisted he will not raise taxes on the middle class. He reiterated that promise during his speech accepting the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention:

A Democratic governor said Romney “left his state 47th out of 50 in job growth.”
Actually, In the year before Romney took office, the state ranked 50th in job creation, and by his final year, the state ranked 28th.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn made the misleading claim that Romney “added $2.6 billion in debt.”
That’s a reference to long-term bond debt, used for capital improvements, such as paving roads, building bridges and repairing public college buildings and courthouses.
To be sure, long-term debt increased by $2.7 billion during Romney’s tenure. But that’s nothing out of the ordinary. It increased by $4 billion in the four years before Romney took office.

Now to Obama & Biden themselves.

Obama boasted that his plan would cut the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years, citing “independent experts.”
But one such analyst called a key element of the plan a “gimmick.”

Vice President Biden quoted GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney as saying (in a 2007 interview) “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth and spending billions of dollars just to catch one person.” to catch Osama bin Laden.
Actually, Romney said the country would be safer by only “a small percentage” and would see “a very insignificant increase in safety” if al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was caught because another terrorist would rise to power. “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person,” Romney said. Instead, he said he supports a broader strategy to defeat the Islamic jihad movement.
Here's the exact quote:
Liz Sidoti: Why haven’t we caught bin Laden in your opinion?
Romney: I think, I wouldn’t want to over-concentrate on Bin Laden. He’s one of many, many people who are involved in this global Jihadist effort.
He’s by no means the only leader. It’s a very diverse group – Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood and of course different names throughout the world.
It’s not worth moving heaven and earth and spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person. It is worth fashioning and executing an effective strategy to defeat global, violent Jihad and I have a plan for doing that.

The president said U.S. automakers are “back on top of the world.”
GM has slipped back to No. 2 and is headed for third place in global sales this year, behind Toyota and Volkswagen.

Biden said “the experts” concluded Romney’s corporate tax plan would create 800,000 jobs in other countries.
One expert said that. She also said the number depends on the details, and foreign jobs could grow without costing the U.S. jobs.

Obama quoted Romney as saying it was “tragic” to “end the war in Iraq.”
What Romney was criticizing was the pace of Obama’s troop withdrawal, not ending the war. Criticizing the “precipitous” pace of withdrawal and the president’s failure to leave a residual force in Iraq is a far cry from calling the end of the war in Iraq 'tragic.'

Biden claimed Romney “believes it’s OK to raise taxes on middle classes by $2,000.”
Actually Romney promises to NOT raise middle-class taxes.

Many of these facts shamelessly taken from factcheck.org

Nut case checks in

From SoulStraw3 August 27, 2012 7:18 PM
'Man I was right. Anyone who hates Barack Obama do so because the are racists and hate having black people in the White House!

Wow, I don't think Obama's that great of a President, but...

1.) it's a photo on Obama's campaign Twitter feed

2.) Calling a lie a lie, is not equal to cheerleading or worship. It's just calling out B.S.

3.) You're all idiots. Honestly, my voting record is about 50-50, but after the nastiness of the last five years, I won't vote Republican for a long ol' while. When y'all make even the most radical Democrats look like sane, responsible people, that should be your sign.

5.) Isn't it odd you blame the cuts on President Obama yet the Space Exploration site shows how President Obama threatened to VETO a bill which cut funding to NASA's Commercial Crew Program. The funding for the shuttle missions were cut because the shuttles were no longer necessary that does not mean that NASA is no longer being funded for Space exploration, just funded for a new program. Perhaps you should actually check your allegations against the President before you repeat them!

6.) Ah ha......the regular attacks don't work, so let's try this one....

I know a REAL narcissist. I can assure you Anyone who doesn't have a hateful bone in their body KNOWS that Big O is not one. Not even close.

Perhaps you are referring to Healthy Narcissism? In that case, O thanks you for the compliment.
http://en.wikipedia....lthy_narcissism

You are all pathetic sociopaths with no grip on reality. Literally nothing you have said is true or even sane. Like it or not, this is the ELECTED president. Your disrespect is incredible. Keep believing Pam's sick, twisted and misguided rantings. Have fun holing yourselves up in your houses with guns waiting for a holy war. You're all sick and I hope none of you have children you can spread your illness to. If you do have children I hope social services rips them out of your pathetic, xenophobic, racist, ignorant, hateful arms. You all have blood on your hands.'

I see you've set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public.
1.) If I don't think Nobama is worth a damn, I must be racist (Anyone who hates Barack Obama do so because the are racists and hate having black people in the White House). You're an ass for that false claim alone.
I hate Obama because he's an unAmerican, hypocritical clown who blames others for his own failures.

2.) And according to you, I'm a racist for pointing out his lies.

3.) I'm a registered Democrat, you moron.

4.) You can't count to 4!!!!! HA HA HA HA!

5.) What allegations did I make? How about some quotes. The quote I made was from Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell and Gene Cernan. They said it, I just believe AMERICAN Heroes instead of a clown.

6.) Signs of narcissism, An obvious self-focus (check), Difficulty with empathy (check), Hypersensitivity to any insults or imagined insults (check), Vulnerability to shame rather than guilt (check), Detesting those who do not admire them (check), Pretending to be more important than they really are (check), Bragging and exaggerating their achievements (check), Yep. Sounds narcissistic alright.
"Keep believing Pam's sick, twisted and misguided rantings." And who the HELL is Pam?

"You are all pathetic sociopaths with no grip on reality. Literally nothing you have said is true or even sane. Like it or not, this is the ELECTED president. Your disrespect is incredible. WOW, I don't know what your mental problem is, but I'll bet it's hard to pronounce.
BTW Xenophobia is defined as an intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries. So YOU think he was born in Kenya. And YOU are calling ME names!

So to summerize, If I don't agree with your views, you think you get to call me names, try (unsuccessfully) to twist my words and try to spread lies and hate.

You're an ass.

Sherman Hills not Barney Farms

If no one noticed, this city administration has its hypocritical hat on.
I'll get right to the proof.
'Wilkes-Barre Administrative Coordinator Drew McLaughlin said that with recent cuts to Community Development funding and further cuts anticipated in coming years, “financing installation of security cameras for a privately owned facility would not be a priority of the administration with the funds available.”
“The private operator should bear the cost burden of such a proactive security measure,” McLaughlin said.'

And for those who still don't understand, '“The private operator should bear the cost burden of such a proactive security measure,” McLaughlin said.'

Obviously this doesn't count dictator Leighton or JJ. Free gas and free security systems (that the taxpayers sometimes payed the monthly fees for). Oh and now if you steal gas you get a new Jeep, I wonder if the dealership (or its owner) contributed to any mayoral or council political campaigns? Why not fix on of the MANY cars in the DPW lot and let him use that? If the city is in such bad financial shape that would be cheaper. BTW McGroarty had dozens of broken vehicles in the DPW lot also.

Leighton said his administration “has never spent taxpayer’s money frivolously and we are not about to start now.
OH? What about the school bus that hasn't moved in AT LEAST 2 years? No waste of taxpayer money there.

I guess it also doesn't include the sewer gear sitting under the Cross Valley.

True Heroes

America has lost a hero.
Neil Armstrong (82) passed away today.

A Navy pilot, Korean War Vet, and test pilot, Armstrong was best known for being the first man to step foot on the moon. His contributions to our space program were much more.
He was the Command Pilot for Gemini 8 which had the first rendezvous and first ever successful docking between two spacecraft in orbit.
He was the backup Command Pilot for Gemini 11 and Apollo 8.

Incredible accomplishments for someone prone to motion sickness as a child.

On July 21, 1969 he transmitted these words, "I'm going to step off the LEM now.....That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
Yes, A man. The 'a' was obscured by static.

In a letter, signed by Apollo veterans Jim Lovell and Gene Cernan, he said, "For The United States, the leading space faring nation for nearly half a century, to be without carriage to low Earth orbit and with no human exploration capability to go beyond Earth orbit for an indeterminate time into the future, destines our nation to become one of second or even third rate stature".

As my friend Stephen wrote, "Twelve men walked on the moon, and there are now eight men still living who have walked on the moon.

Apollo 11: 20 Jul 1969 — Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin
Apollo 12: 19 Nov 1969 — Charles (Pete) Conrad, Alan Bean
Apollo 14: 05 Feb 1971 — Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell
Apollo 15: 30 Jul 1971 — James Irwin, David Scott
Apollo 16: 21-23 Apr 1972 — Charles Duke, John Young
Apollo 17: 11-13 Dec 1972 — Harrison Schmitt, Eugene Cernan

Three others have passed away:

Pete Conrad died 07/08/1999
Alan Shepard died 07/21/1998
James Irwin died 08/08/1991
Neil Armstrong died 08/25/2012

Of the living, Buzz Aldrin is the oldest at 82. The youngest Charles Duke, 76."

Armstrong underwent surgery on August 7, 2012, for blocked coronary arteries. He died at 2:45pm on August 25, 2012, at a hospital in Columbus, Ohio, from complications.

Remember when McGroarty was getting, well deserved, crap about buying crap just to buy it? Specifically the storm sewer junctions? Leighton is wasting money the same way.

But the dictator is doing it even bigger.

I wonder how much this MESS cost us?

All this is under the cross valley, by Brookside.

Since Leighton hasn't had an original thought since 1996 (the intermodel, theater, Coal St, Ice rink, and others were all McGroarty's ideas), I guess it's only natural to overdo with the sewer junctions as well.

Shooter who aided officer gives his account of Peach House RV Park incident

Here is what appears to have happened.
After an arguement over a neighbor's dogs, the criminal killed the owner of the dogs, the dogs and the owner's wife and then grabbed a lever action .30-30 rifle to set up an ambush for police. A 66 year old citizen saw the Bad Guy (BG) attempting to ambush the police officer and made a 165 yard shot with a .357 Magnum 5" revolver which connected to the leg. The murderer turned to fire at the citizen  and the officer was able to grab his rifle and take cover behind his vehicle. The BG then fired at the good samaritan, but missed. The citizen then returned fire with 4 more hits allowing the officer to close and end the firefight.

Now some points (Yep another list)
1. HOLY SHARPSHOOTING BATMAN!! 165 yards (later lasered to be 167 yards) with a 5" .357!!!! And hit 5 out of 5 times!!!!! While under fire!!!! As my firend Jack Leuba said, "To do that in real life, when it really matters, is awesome. Somebody name a range after that guy." And when a Bronze star recipient (who also helped train some of our nations plus some of our closest allies best) is impressed, You listen.
For those of you who aren't gun people, this is Sergeant York good. You know the guy they made that old film about. Olympians should learn from this guy. It is THAT IMPRESSIVE.

2. Kudos to the police,
Sheriff Grubbs commended the assisting resident for his actions. Law enforcement has determined that the resident acted valiantly and perhaps saved the lives of Sgt. Means and responding deputies, Grubbs said. “His actions may have also saved the lives of other citizens who could have innocently walked into the situation. Under fire, the resident shooter returned fire at precisely the right moment. One of the rounds struck Conner in the thigh and staggered Conner as he turned fire on Sgt. Means,” said Grubbs. “This staggered Conner from having an effective aim as Conner fired upon Sgt. Means. This also enabled Sgt. Means to accurately return fire on Conner.”
And
“Had this citizen not had a gun, this could have been a whole lot worse,” said Grubbs.

3. I want to thank this 66 year old man, who risked his life for a stranger, when most people would just say,"It's what the police get paid for". Even had he missed (and boy he did NOT) His shots would have warned the officer of the immediate danger.

4. Most ballistics vest will NOT stop a rifle round.

This is what gun control should mean.

Thoughts

Just a quick thought. Leighton claims that, "He said he sought mileage reimbursement because he would often use his wife’s car for out-of-town trips because he has his vehicle through a lease, meaning he has to watch mileage carefully."
Obviously he didn't 'think' THAT response out very well.
It means that while he was driving his wife's car around on trips, his wife was driving his car around....... ON CITY GAS!

“You are always going to have skeptics out there, and that’s unfortunate. It’s something I deal with every day,” Leighton said. “I would hope you would take my word because I’m telling you exactly what I did.”
Obviously (again) the dictator wants us to forget that HE LIED TO US ABOUT THE MILLION DOLLAR DONATION, SEVERAL TIMES!!!

Oh and the lies to the county commissioners so Leo could get the Old River Road Bakery tax free.

Or that he TRIED to lie to the feds to get the Sterling demolished.
