Is it beginning?

In my 18 years, I've seen 3 fire house closings and three Engines (plus our now 'part time' Engine)& a Truck go out of service. It follows something of a predictable pattern.

The Engine becomes a reserve Engine (Last night the 'new' front line engine from South Station was filling in for Engine 2 at Hollenback, even though a reserve engine was available and even though South Station was manned all day. South Station had to use the 20 year old reserve).

Equipment starts 'disappearing' from the Engine or it doesn't get new equipment. (This has been going on for a while)

Equipment needed for building maintenance starts disappearing from the Engine house. (The 24 foot ladder we need to change the lights in the very high ceilings is gone, we had to borrow a floor buffer, etc.)

Repairs to the building get put on the back burner.

Upgrades to the building don't happen.

Is this Engine 3 or a reserve piece now?

Why? I guess some parts of our city are 'more' equal than others.

  1. Dan,
It seems that unless the Cueball has a photo-op,
or does something that causes his cronies to sing praises to his name, nothing else matters? Doesn't the WBFD have a RAN (replace as needed) program for its firefighting equipment? How can a piece of equipment (engine) be dispatched to a fire scene without all the necessary things to do the job effectively, and to not jeopardize the safety of the personnel, or civilians?
Are all Politicians assholes, or have we cornered the market? ( read Scranton). Why when they screw up do they place the Firemen/Police on the sacrificial alter? Why not cut back on their exorbitant wages/perks, or let some of their relatives go?
And lastly, what in Gods name will it take to wake up the people and make them realize that the popular candidate is slipping them the big one..........

  2. Lack of maintenance is the cities biggest problem. That is why Miners Mills and Brookside got flooged.
