Doing the Big-Check Dance in Downtown Wilkes-Barre

Big, comically oversized checks might look funny, but when politicians hand out big checks, the joke is usually at taxpayers' expense

In April 2010, Congressman Paul Kanjorski did the big-check dance in downtown Wilkes-Barre.
Coming along for the ride were Pennsylvania state senate hopefuls, John Yudichak and Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton.

On the receiving end of the big check was a start-up company, Federal Review Services. Federal Review was promising to create 100 new jobs in downtown Wilkes-Barre with salaries from $35,000 to $65,000.

Federal Review announced layoffs only two months after being handed that big check.

The moral of the story? Big checks from politicians don't create jobs. Jobs are created by businesses that fill a need in the marketplace. If you have a great idea that will make money, you don't need the government...you need a bank. People who rely on government sources for start-up funding usually have better connections than ideas.

  1. The last paragraph sums it up. Politicians don't create jobs; businessmen do. It's amazing how many "lifers" (people who suck the life out of the system, i.e., the taxpayers) there are in the Wyoming Valley.

I see former school teachers who were also principals now running for the school board or some other type of political jobs. These people are pathetic.
