You can't look at a paper without seeing that dictator Leighton finally payed the award on Thursday. People are reasonably angry. But before you set your mind, let me take you back to 2004 when the FD thought our Emperor was actually the golden child. He asked all the city unions to help the city financially in their contracts. the fire union did (concessions = approx 3.5 million dollars over 7 years). Mayor Leighton said "By making (these) substantial concessions, the firefighters' union has agreed to become partners with the city in its revitalization plan" (04-27 2004 Times Leader).
The Fire Fighters Union did more than their part (what did the other unions do?), and since then we have been demonized, had 3 engine houses closed, 3 fire engines taken out of service, the publics health and safety ignored, been threatened, down 19 men, and (this one you should write on your calender, It's not 'official' yet) by the end of the year (whether Leighton wins or loses re-election) South Station will be sold. To who? I don't know, but I bet it will be a campaign contributor.
